CHAPTER 21

Hours later, Greeta shivered violently while she marched next to Shadow. “I thought the Land of Ice was cold. This is much worse!”

The mountains loomed closer, cold and inhospitable. Their thick mists rolled across the flat and desolate landscape through which the women trekked. Icy wind blasted past the women and howled in their ears.

Looking up, Greeta saw a brief beam of sunlight break through the mists and strike the side of the mountain, which gleamed and sparkled in response. “Those mountains,” Greeta said. “They’re covered in ice. Like the way bare trees can be coated in a layer of ice after a winter storm.”

When the wind died, a thick bubbling sound filled the silence left behind.

“What is that?” Greeta said. She sniffed the air. “It sounds like something being cooked, but I don’t smell food.”

Shadow pointed away from the mountains. “Remember how I told you there would come a time when we’d need to make a sharp turn to keep from wandering into the world next to the one belonging to the blacksmiths? That time has come. We’re going that way.”

“Wait,” Greeta said, standing still. “If someone is cooking, maybe they’ll give us food. Shouldn’t we eat?”

“No,” Shadow said. “We should keep moving.” Looking in all directions, Shadow appeared to be looking for a landmark she couldn’t find.

Is Shadow lost again?

Greeta’s stomach rumbled. Not having eaten in a long time, she felt light headed and weak. “I can’t. If I don’t eat soon, I won’t be able to keep going. I won’t be any good to you if I don’t get my strength back.”

The bubbling sound became louder.

Greeta walked toward the bubbling sound. “Hello! Can you help me?”

The mist thickened like a cloak around Greeta when she stepped away from the shaman.

“Greeta!” Shadow said. “I can’t see you! Stay where you are, but keep talking so I can find you.”

And let you drag me away from my first chance to get a meal all day?

Greeta’s stomach rumbled again. She wrapped her arms around her belly in an effort to muffle the tell-tale sound.

A rumble deeper than Greeta’s stomach sounded nearby.

“Fine!” Shadow’s voice said through the mist. “We’ll get you something to eat. But I can guarantee you won’t find anything here!” With every word, Shadow’s voice became fainter, as if she were unwittingly walking away from Greeta instead of toward her.

The deep rumble sounded again, closer this time.

A blast of putrid air rushed at Greeta, clearing the mist in front of her.

In the dim light, Greeta saw the face of a dragon staring at her. But unlike the ice dragons fashioned from sorcery that she’d fought in the Land of Ice, this dragon was real.

Its yellow eyes considered Greeta as if she might be its next meal. The creature’s jaw slackened to reveal rows bearing hundreds of needle-like teeth while spittle dipped from its mouth. The gray scales covering its body glistened from where the mist had brushed against it.

Behind its twitching tail stood a spring of boiling water.
